"Half of the positives are asymptomatic"- Learned from thorough testing in Iceland

アイスランドの人口は３６万人。３月末までに、その５％近くを占める１万７９００人余りが新型ウイルスの検査を受けた。国立大学病院では高リスクのグループや症状のある患者を対象に検査を実施しているが、約半分は保健当局の委託を受けたバイオ医薬品会社、デコード・ジェネティクスが一般市民を対象に実施している。

デコード・ジェネティクスは米バイオ医薬品会社アムジェンの子会社。保健当局によると、同社のスクリーニング検査は症状のない人、現時点で隔離されていない人がだれでも受けられる。ただし、今のところ自発的に検査を受けたケースに限られるため、多少の偏りはあるという。

同社を設立したカリ・ステファンソン博士がＣＮＮに語ったところによると、これまでに検査した約９０００人のうち、陽性反応を示したのは１％未満。このうち約半分が無症状だった。

「一般市民へのスクリーニング検査により、症状が出る前の感染者を早期に見つけることができている」と、同博士は語る。

検出されたウイルス全ての地理的起源も特定することができる。イタリア、オーストリア、英国と、それぞれの起源ごとに小さな変異が認められる。米西海岸に特有の変異も１件見つかった。

感染した場合に軽症で済むか、重症化するかの違いがウイルスの変異に由来するのか、患者側の遺伝的要因によるのか、あるいは両方の組み合わせなのかは分からない。ただし、同社はすでに半数近い国民の医療情報や遺伝子型のデータを持っているため、答えを見つけやすい立場にあるという。

(CNN) Iceland, a Scandinavian island nation, was known for its thorough testing for new coronavirus infections. Tests to date had revealed remarkable results, such as the absence of symptoms in half of the tested positive individuals.

Iceland had a population of 360,000. By the end of March, nearly 17,900 people, or nearly 5 percent, had been screened for the new virus. National University Hospital conducted tests on high-risk groups and patients with symptoms, but about half of them were conducted by the biopharmaceutical company Decode Genetics commissioned by health authorities, with the general public as the target.

Decode Genetics was a subsidiary of US biopharmaceutical company Amgen. According to health officials, the company's screening tests were open to anyone without symptoms and who were not currently being isolated. However, at this time, there were some bias because it was limited to cases of voluntary testing.

The company's founder, Dr. Kari Stefanson, told CNN that of the approximately 9,000 people tested so far, and less than 1% had been tested positive. About half of them were asymptomatic.

Dr. Kari Stefanson said "with screening tests for the general public it is possible to find infected people before they develop symptoms”.

The geographic origin of all detected viruses could also be identified. For each origin in Italy, Austria and the UK small variations were found. One unique mutation was found on the US West Coast.

It was not known whether the difference between mild or severe infections was due to a mutation in the virus, or a genetic factor on the part of the patient, or a combination of both. However, the company already had medical information and genotype data for nearly half of the people, so it was in a position to find answers easily.

              So, the test in Iceland have revealed that half of the positively tested individuals could have no symptoms. I think both social distancing and wearing mask are important in stopping the new virus.
