【ニューヨーク＝村山誠】米東部ニューヨーク州で３日、新型コロナウイルスの感染者が１０万人を突破した。１日１万人単位で感染者が増え、２４時間で５００人以上が死亡する危機的な状況だ。「医療崩壊」が現実のものとなりつつある。
■「本当につらい」
ニューヨーク州のクオモ知事は３日、州内の感染者が前日より約１万人増えて１０万２８６３人になったと発表した。死者は約５６０人増の２９３５人。入院患者は約１５００人増え、１万４８１０人にもなる。
ニューヨーク市クイーンズ地区の総合病院は、約６００の病床を約１０００床に増やして急増する患者に対応している。救急救命室の看護師トリシャ・マヨルガさん（３１）は「患者が次々と運ばれてきて、救急救命室や集中治療室（ＩＣＵ）もいっぱい。ロビーが治療の優先順位を決めるトリアージの場だ」と実情を明かす。
病院では、持病のない４０～５０代の中年世代、２０代の若者らも次々に命を落としている。感染を防ぐため、家族らは患者と面会できず、「彼らは一人で苦しみながら孤独に死んでいく。本当につらい。この世の終わりのような光景だ」と語る。
■命の選別
ニューヨーク州では、重篤な患者に不可欠な人工呼吸器の不足が目前に迫る。
州内では、人工呼吸器が必要な患者が毎日３５０人程度増えており、クオモ知事が２日に明かした「６日分の在庫」が尽きるまでは、あと数日だ。知事は３日、郊外の病院や民間企業などにある未使用器を回収し、再配備するための行政命令を出すと発表した。
マヨルガさんは「人工呼吸器を使う患者を『選別』しなければならない、厳しい局面になってきている」と話す。
■防護服使い回し
マンハッタンの総合病院では、すでに人工呼吸器が足りなくなり始めているとの証言もある。看護師ルイーサ・ティナペイさん（２５）は「１台の人工呼吸器を２人で使うなど、ここではすでに綱渡りの医療が行われている」と明かす。
医療器具や人手不足も深刻で、医療用の高機能マスクを何度も使い、耐久性に乏しい防護服を着回している。ティナペイさんの周囲には、感染した同僚もいる。
ティナペイさんは「今ここで起きていることは、もちろん日本でも起こり得る。一人でも多くの命を守るため、皆がこのウイルスの恐ろしさを知り、外出制限などのルール順守を徹底してほしい」と訴えている。

triage area where treatment priorities are decided."
In the hospital, middle-aged people in their 40s and 50s who
did not have disease, and young people in their 20s were dying one after
another. To prevent the infection, families could not meet the patients. It was
said that "Individually they die alone suffering in pain. It is really
painful. It's like the end of the world."

Selection of life
In New York, the shortage of ventilators essential for
critically ill patients was imminent.
In the state, the number of patients requiring respirators was
increasing by about 350 every day, and Governor Cuomo on the 2nd
revealed that it was only a few days before "stock for six days" ran
out.
On March 3 the governor announced that he might issue an administrative
order to collect unused equipment in suburban hospitals and private companies for
redeployment.
Mayorga said " we have to make a ‘choice’ on which patients
to use respirators, the situation is getting serious."
■ Reuse
protective clothing
In Manhattan’s general hospital there were testimonials
indicating that it was already running out of respirators. Nurse Luisa Tinapei,
25, revealed that “tightrope medical treatment is already practiced here - using
one ventilator for two people and the like."
There was a serious shortage of medical equipment and
manpower, the high-performance medical masks were reused many times, and
protective clothing with poor durability were mixed and matched. The colleagues
around Tinapei were also infected.
Tinapei made an appeal that "What's happening here, of
course, can happen in Japan. To protect as many lives as possible, I want
everyone to know the horror of the virus and to strictly follow rules such as
restriction on going out."
So,
doctors in New York is playing god in a sense that they will have to decide
which patient has a priority in using the respiratory machine. It is shocking
to know that many American in New York had died in such a miserable way. I am
interested in knowing who should be held responsible for that.
