Ukraine's Civilian Casualties Exceed 2,200 in June: Highest in Four Years - UN

Recently NHK News on-line reported the following:

Ukraine's Civilian Casualties Exceed 2,200 in June: Highest in Four Years - UN

July 15, 2026, 8:33 AM

Ukraine Situation

On the 14th, the UN human rights monitoring team revealed that over 2,200 civilians were killed or injured in Ukraine last month due to Russia's ongoing military invasion, marking the highest monthly toll since April 2022 when the invasion began.

The UN Observatory for Human Rights in Ukraine announced on the 14th that at least 2,283 Ukrainian civilians were killed or injured in the Russian military attacks last month.

The breakdown was 293 dead and 1,990 injured, the highest monthly figure since April 2022 when the invasion began.

The Human Rights Observatory attributed the increase in casualties to the increased use of powerful weapons against densely populated urban areas.

Meanwhile, on the 14th, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy posted a video on social media announcing attacks on oil refineries in the Republic of Bashkortostan in central Russia and the Krasnodar Krai in the south.

It was also stated that in the city of Gelendzhik which was facing the Black Sea, attacks were made on tankers carrying Russian oil, the so-called "shadow fleet".

President Zelenskyy declared that "the war must end" and indicated his intention to increase pressure on Russia and force the start of peace negotiations.

So, the UN announces that at least 2,283 Ukrainian civilians were killed or injured in the Russian military attacks last month, the highest monthly figure since the invasion begins. Apparently, Ukraine is breeding and needs more air defense system to protect its people.

[Analysis] What Does Trump's Announcement Regarding Interceptor Missiles for the "Patriot" System Mean for Ukraine?

 Recently CNN.co.jp reported the following:

2026.07.09 Thu posted at 11:55 JST

[Analysis] What Does Trump's Announcement Regarding Interceptor Missiles for the "Patriot" System Mean for Ukraine?

July 9, 2026 (Thu) Posted at 11:55 JST

(CNN) US President Trump appeared to have authorized Ukraine to produce interceptor missiles for the "Patriot" air defense system. This would be a noteworthy development in two respects.

First, this would give Ukraine access to highly classified missile defense technology that the US had been reluctant to share with its allies. Several months ago, Ukraine, which was told by the US that arms supplies would be stopped, now had the possibility of being authorized to manufacture, and potentially even export some of the weapons back to the US and its allies that desperately needed them.

There were many hurdles waiting ahead. Ukraine had to build its own production lines, but given the urgent need and Ukraine's long-standing desire to replicate this technology, there was a possibility that the schedule might be significantly shortened.

Countries in wartime move quickly. Manufacturers of Patriot missiles, such as Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, would undoubtedly have doubts about this arrangement. At best, it diluted the commercial potential of their intellectual property. However, Ukraine had proven itself a world leader in both drone strike and interception technology, quickly adopting new ideas, mass-producing them, and gaining an advantage on the current front lines. Ukraine's frequent use of Patriots might even lead to design improvements.

Stepping back from these notable business developments, let's consider a significant shift in tone. Last year, Trump claimed Ukraine had no trump cards, halting free arms supplies and demanding they purchase them themselves. He also demanded the transfer of mineral resources and threatened to cut off intelligence sharing. Now, however, he's indicating his willingness to allow Ukraine to manufacture its most highly classified missiles and mentioning the possibility that a Ukrainian offensive could force the Russian government to make peace.

This was a surprising shift and was likely to reach the ears of the Kremlin (Presidential Administration of Russia).

So, there is a shift in tone in Trump. Months ago, he claimed that Ukraine had no trump cards, halting free arms supplies and demanding they purchase them themselves. Now, he's indicating a willingness to allow Ukraine to manufacture its most highly classified missiles and mentioning the possibility that a Ukrainian offensive could force the Russian government to make peace. It is interesting to note such changes.

President Zelenskyy Claims 590 Square Kilometers Liberated from Russia This Year

Recently NHK News on-line reported the following:

President Zelenskyy Claims 590 Square Kilometers Liberated from Russia This Year

May 23, 2026, 8:38 PM

Ukraine Situation

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy claimed on the 22nd that entering this year 590 square kilometers had been liberated from Russia's ongoing military invasion. He emphasized his intention to intensify counterattacks and continue drone strikes against oil facilities and other targets within Russian territory.

In a video address on the 22nd, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated, "Since the beginning of this year, 590 square kilometers of our territory have been liberated and are now under our control."

He further emphasized his intention to intensify counterattacks in the occupied areas and continue drone strikes against oil facilities and other targets within Russian territory so as to cut off Russia's funding sources as an oil-producing nation.

In a report released earlier this month, the American think tank, the Institute for War Studies, analyzed that the Russian military's advance had been "steadily slowing" since November of last year due to counterattacks by the Ukrainian army and medium-range attacks on supply bases.

Amidst this, authorities in the Krasnodar region of southern Russia announced on social media on the 23rd that a drone attack had occurred in Novorossiysk, a city on the Black Sea coast, injuring two people and causing a fire at an oil facility.

So, Ukraine claims that entering this year 590 square kilometers have been liberated from Russia. This suggestion matches the Institute for War Studies’ analysis that the Russian military's advance has been "steadily slowing". Apparently, Russia is facing difficulties in continuing with the war. I think the chance for the war to come to an end is increasing.

Up to 5,000 Cuban Fighters on Russian Side, US Report

Recently NHK News on-line reported the following:

Up to 5,000 Cuban Fighters on Russian Side, US Report

April 15, 2026, 8:12 PM

Ukraine Situation

American news sites had reported on a US State Department report stating that up to 5,000 Cuban fighters were cooperating with Russia in Ukraine and fighting on its side.

The American news site Axios reported on the 14th that the State Department report indicated that, based on their nationality, Cubans were one of the largest groups of foreign fighters supporting Russia's military invasion of Ukraine,

The report analyzed that between 1,000 and up to 5,000 Cuban fighters were consistently participating in combat on the Russian side, and were also cooperating diplomatically and politically.

At the same time, while publicly available records did not confirm whether the Cuban government had sent fighters, there were indications that it tacitly approved the act.

This report was reportedly sent to some congressional committees this month.

Axios also reported that the report's contents came to light as the Trump administration increased pressure on Cuba to force a change of government, and quoted a senator as saying, "Cuba is harming American national interests around the world."

The Russian military was said to have been supplementing its troop shortages by deploying soldiers recruited from North Korea, Africa, and other regions.

So, American news sites have reported on a US State Department report stating that up to 5,000 Cuban fighters are cooperating with Russia in fighting Ukraine. Probably, this is the reason why Russia sent oil to Cuba to alleviate the oil shortage problem.

Recently Reuters reported the following:

Ukrainian drones strike Russia's Ust-Luga port again, sources say oil terminal hit

Reporting by Reuters. Editing by Mark Trevelyan and Mark Potter

March 30, 202610:05 PM PDTUpdated 10 hours ago

MOSCOW, March 31 (Reuters) - Ukrainian drones on Tuesday struck Russia's Baltic Sea port of ‌Ust-Luga for the fifth time in 10 days, and industry sources told Reuters an oil loading terminal was hit, likely adding to Russia's difficulties in exporting crude.

Kyiv has stepped up attacks on Russia's oil export infrastructure over the past month, launching its heaviest drone strikes of the more than four-year war against the Baltic ports of Ust-Luga and Primorsk.

At least 40% of Russia's oil export capacity has been halted due to drone attacks, a disputed strike on a major pipeline and the seizure of tankers, according to Reuters calculations based on market data.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday that some of Kyiv's allies had sent "signals" about the possibility of scaling back its long-range strikes on Russia's oil sector as global energy prices have surged due to the Iran war.

TRANSNEFT OIL TERMINAL HIT

Regional governor Alexander Drozdenko said three people, including two children, were treated for injuries, and several buildings had been damaged in the overnight attacks.

In a message on Telegram at 0409 GMT, he said air-raid alerts in the region had been lifted but gave no details on damage to the port.

He later said that the aftermath ‌of the attack on Ust-Luga had been "eliminated" or dealt with. He said the supply of hot water and heating to residential and other units in the region were restored.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the strikes "terrorist attacks," adding that Russia was working on protecting its critical infrastructure.

"This doesn't mean these facilities can be 100% protected from such terrorist attacks. However, intensive work is being carried out, and this applies not only to the port ... but to all other critical infrastructure facilities," he told a daily conference call with reporters.

Three industry sources told Reuters Ukrainian drones struck crude oil loading facilities operated by Russian pipeline monopoly Transneft (TRNF_p.MM), opens new tab in the latest attack. Transneft did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Ust-Luga, on the south-eastern shore of the Gulf of Finland, is a sprawling complex of oil-processing facilities and export terminals handling crude oil and oil products.

According to source-based data, the port exported 32.9 million metric tons of oil products last year. It typically handles about 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

Authorities say Ust-Luga was hit on March 22, 25, 27, 29 and 31, forcing suspensions of export operations.

Transneft

So, Ukrainian drones have struck Russia's Baltic Sea port of ‌Ust-Luga for the fifth time in 10 days, likely adding to Russia's difficulties in exporting crude. Apparently, Ukraine has the capability to attack far way targets inside Russia.

Russia's GDP last year increased 1% year-on-year, the first significant slowdown in three years

Recently NHK News on-line reported the following:

Russia's GDP last year increased 1% year-on-year, the first significant slowdown in three years

February 8, 2026, 1:48 AM

Russia

As Russia's invasion of Ukraine dragged on, Russia's GDP (gross domestic product) growth rate for the past year increased 1% compared to the previous year, being the first significant slowdown in three years.

On the 6th, the Federal Statistics Service of Russia announced GDP figures for the past year, showing a real growth rate of 1% compared to the previous year.

After the invasion of Ukraine, massive military spending drove the economy, and growth rates exceeded 4% in both 2023 and 2024, but had since slowed down significantly.

Due to rising prices because of wartime labor shortages and other factors, the Russian Central Bank had maintained its policy interest rate at a high level at 16% currently. The heavy interest burden had led to a decline in consumption and a slump in corporate production.

Also, a series of tax increases had been implemented to raise funds for the war, including a 2% increase in the value-added tax (VAT) last month to reach 22%, it was an equivalent to Japan's consumption tax.

Moscow residents’ dissatisfaction with rising prices and military operations could be heard.

One man said, "Prices and rents are going up. The special military operations, the sanctions, everything is affecting our lives."

When asked if she thought the military operations were related to rising prices, the woman replied, "It is related. That's why everyone is asking, 'When will it end?'" and expressed hope for an early peace.

So, Russia's GDP growth rate has increased merely 1% compared to the previous year.  Prices of commodities and rents are going up and affecting the daily lives of the Russian. Apparently, Putin is also facing the pressure to end the war.

Recently CNN.com reported the following:

Russia is using Starlink to make its killer drones fly farther

CNN- By Ivana Kottasová, Daria Tarasova-Markina

Updated Jan 29, 2026

Russia has been mounting Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite systems on its attack drones to strike deeper into Ukraine, extending their potential flight range to well inside NATO territory, analysts and Ukrainian officials have said.

Ukraine has collected evidence of “hundreds” of attacks by Russian drones equipped with Starlink terminals, Serhii Beskrestnov, a military tech expert and adviser to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, said on Thursday.

“(Attacks) not on military targets, but on peaceful rear and frontline cities. Including residential buildings. In fact, this is terrorism using modern peaceful communication technologies,” he said.

Adding Starlink allows Moscow to bypass Ukraine’s electronic defenses that disable drones by jamming GPS and radio signals.

Russia has previously got around these signal blockers by using drones controlled by fiber optic cables. But while these cannot be disabled electronically, their range is limited by the length of the cable.

Starlink-equipped drones have a longer range than radio and cable-guided drones and cannot be jammed. The superfast connection also makes it possible to control them in real-time from inside Russia, allowing them to be much more precise.

CNN has asked Starlink for comment, but received no answer. Under US sanctions, Starlink cannot be sold or used in Russia.

While other Russian drones and missiles can cover longer distances, they are a lot more expensive, larger and easier to detect and take down. A simpler drone equipped with a Starlink Mini, which costs between $250 and $500, can be much cheaper and as effective as the more advanced models that cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Beskrestnov, better known in the drone tech circles under his moniker Flash, shared a photograph of a BM-35 drone strike in Dnipro, saying that the Starlink-equipped drone can fly a distance of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles).

He said it was also likely that the deadly strike on a civilian train in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday was conducted with a Shahed drone equipped with a mesh radio modem or possibly a Starlink, given it was able to get through electronic defenses and was guided by its pilot to strike the middle of a moving train.

Earlier this month, Flash told the Ukrainian Public Broadcaster Suspilne that a swarm of Starlink-equipped Molniya drones was recently used to hit Ukrainian energy facilities in the Chernihiv region. The Molniya drones are very simple and cheap machines made with plywood, capable of flying dozens of miles.

He said that one in every three of the drones managed to hit its target because of the Starlink technology. “It is impossible to suppress (them) with electronic warfare. It can only be physically shot down if an anti-aircraft drone sees it and shoots it down,” he said.

He said on Thursday that more Starlink-equipped Molniya drones were used overnight near Pavlohrad some 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the front lines.

Bypassing jammers

Ukraine’s recently appointed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was previously in charge of drone development and procurement as the minister for science, tech and digital transformation, said that Ukraine needs to respond “very quickly” to the Starlink development.

“The enemy is constantly improving its drones and attack tactics to achieve its goals. Every day, a new risk emerges,” he said, adding that Russia launched over 6,000 drones in the past month alone. That is slightly more than in December and November, but more than twice the number recorded at the same time last year.

Fedorov said on Thursday that the ministry has contacted SpaceX, Musk’s company that owns Starlink, with proposals on how to stop Russia from using the technology.

He said he was grateful to “SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and Elon Musk personally for their quick response and for starting to work on resolving the situation.

Ukraine has become heavily reliant on Starlink since the beginning the war. The system is used by the military to communicate and operate drones, by the government as well as many civilians, businesses and public institutions including hospitals and schools.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US-based conflict monitor, said that based on the reported 500-kilometer range “most of Ukraine, all of Moldova, and parts of Poland, Romania, and Lithuania” are in range of the Starlink-equipped BM-35 drones if launched from Russia or occupied Ukraine.

Ukraine’s sanctions commissioner Vladyslav Vlasiuk said earlier this week that the growing use of Starlink by Russia shows that the sanctions pressure Ukraine’s allies put on Russia is “insufficient.”

CNN has previously reported on Russian troops bypassing the sanctions by buying Starlink systems in third countries and then using them along the frontlines. At that time, Starlink said that it would deactivate any terminal found to be used by a sanctioned or unauthorized party.

Musk himself did respond to criticism of his technology being used by Russia earlier this week when he was asked by Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on X why he doesn’t “stop the Russians from using Starlinks to target Ukrainian cities.”

Musk responded by calling Sikorski a “drooling imbecile” and saying Starlink was “the backbone of Ukraine military communications.” He did not address the question of Russia using the system.

烏克蘭新任國防部長Mykhailo Fedorov(此前曾擔任科技和數位轉型部長,負責無人機研發和採購)表示,烏克蘭需要「迅速」應對星鏈系統的發展。

So, Russia has been mounting Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite systems on its attack drones to strike deeper into Ukraine. CNN has previously reported on Russian troops bypassing the sanctions by buying Starlink systems in third countries and then using them along the frontlines. At that time, Starlink said that it would deactivate any terminal found to be used by a sanctioned or unauthorized party. Apparently,  Starlink is important in conducting drone attacks.

“Our countries have a lot in common,” said a Russian-speaking Chinese guide, who gave his name as Piotr, leading a group of Russians on a visit to a rainforest near the city of Sanya, a popular Hainan beach resort and also the site of a huge naval base for Chinese nuclear submarines.

Invoking a Chinese stereotype of Russians, he apologized that there would only be beer and no vodka at lunch.

The cultural affinity described by the guide is good for business. At his grocery store in Sanya, Dimitry Garifullin, a businessman from the Russian town of Ufa, sells the comforts of home to a growing clientele. But Mr. Garifullin said he has been struck by a different kind of affinity: the local reverence for his own country’s leader, Vladimir V. Putin. Not a fan himself, he said: “Most Chinese like Putin. They see him as a very strong politician.”

But it is Russia, he said, that should learn from China. “Everyone can learn from China,” he added, pointing to economic growth that, even though now far slower than when he first arrived in 2005, still puts Russia’s sickly economy to shame.

His store, stocked with black bread, pickles, cheese, frozen fish, sausages and shelf after shelf of alcohol, did a roaring trade over the New Year holiday.

Asked whether his business had benefited from the war in Ukraine, which has turbocharged Hainan’s Russian tourist boom, he said he did not like the idea of profiting from the suffering of others. He added: “The country that has made the most profit off the war is China.”

His store is in Dadonghai, a resort area near the naval base that has so many Russian visitors that restaurant menus, official notices and shop signs nearly all come with translations in Russian instead of English, the usual lingua franca of mass tourism. Chinese hotel staff in the area greet foreign guests with “ZDRAST-vooy-tye” rather than “hello” or “ni hao.”

Loudspeakers controlled by the local government along the beach at Dadonghai blare the folk classic “Kalinka,” and other Russian favorites.

For some Russian visitors, particularly those who take a dim view of their country’s sharp authoritarian turn under President Putin, China can feel stifling, even by Moscow standards. Anton Poltoushkin, an IT developer from Moscow on his first trip to China, said he had tried to talk to his Chinese tour guide about Taiwan but had been told that the topic was “too sensitive.”

“I talk about the Ukraine war so why can’t you talk about Taiwan?” he said he had asked.

Mr. Poltoushkin said he would have preferred to go to Europe but could not easily get a visa for himself, his wife and young son.

“I love the south of France but how can I get to Nice or Monaco now?” he asked. “I never thought I would end up here but we don’t have many choices these days,” he added.

The European Union in November decided to stop issuing Russian tourist visas that allow for multiple visits and mandated tighter scrutiny of all applicants. This further tightened restrictions on entry to Europe by Russian citizens that began after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

China moved in the opposite direction, allowing visa-free access for Russians to Hainan since 2024 and to the whole country since November, as it tries to revitalize the economy.

Raniya Terkulova, a retired doctor from the Russian region of Tatarstan, said she was on her fifth visit to Hainan. Her family has deep connections to China going back to the 1920s, she said, recalling happy Soviet-era memories of Chinese thermos flasks and other knickknacks. She added that she had for a long time “loved and admired China” and been a big believer in traditional Chinese medicine.

This trip, made with her daughter and granddaughter, however, ended the love affair. “I am very disappointed,” she said, recounting an angry clash on a beach with Chinese vacationers who she said had been rude and domineering.

Occasional culture clashes aside, most Russian visitors enjoy their time in Hainan for a simple reason: the weather. “It is now minus 30 degrees (-22 Fahrenheit) and snowing at home and here it plus 30 (86 Fahrenheit) and sunny,” said a cafe owner from the Siberian city of Khabarovsk who gave only her first name, Nataliya.

She said she used to go to Spain for sun but stopped after Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and the attitude of Spaniards toward Russians soured. “If they heard people speaking Russian in the hotel they wouldn’t clean their rooms properly,” she complained.

In China, she added, hotels are cheaper, and people don’t care about geopolitics, the war in Ukraine or other topics that rile many Europeans. “Chinese don’t spit at Russians like Europeans do,” she said.

So, unlike in many places in Europe, where Russians have learned to keep their voices down because of the war in Ukraine, the beaches of southern China offer a safe and sunny space for Russians. Some Russians feel that the country that get the most profit from the Ukraine war is China. Apparently, the war in Ukraine has affected the daily life of many middle-class Russian and also help tourism in China.

Gathered on New Year’s Eve in the banquet hall of a beachside hotel in southern China, tipsy revelers jumped to their feet to toast the arrival of 2026 — two hours early.

They were not befuddled by too much drink but wanted to celebrate the start of the New Year according to the time in Vladivostok, a Russian city two hours ahead of China.

Slurred cries went up, in Russian: “Happy New Year, Vladivostok! Happy New Year, Russian Far East!” Many of the partygoers — mostly Russians with a few Kazakhs and others from the former Soviet Union — drifted away from the hotel celebration before midnight, when the new year actually began.

Unlike in many places in Europe, where Russians have learned to keep their voices down because of the war in Ukraine, the beaches of southern China offer a safe and sunny space for Russians to behave as they would at home without fear of sideways looks.

Police officers who were out in force to prevent rowdiness broadcast warnings along beaches that fireworks were forbidden. But they stood by as Russian revelers, wobbling drunkenly in the sand, unleashed a barrage of Roman candles into the sea.

The number of Russian tourists visiting the tropical Chinese island has surged, fueling a local economy geared toward Russian tastes.

The number of Russian visitors to Hainan, a Chinese tropical island east of Vietnam in the South China Sea, increased 11 times between 2023 and 2024, making them by far the biggest group, buoyed by a visa-free policy and a hospitality that ignores the war in Ukraine. The Chinese authorities, perhaps fearful of alienating tourists from countries hostile to Russia, last year stopped releasing Hainan visitor figures by country. During the winter high season, the island receives eight or more flights each day from cities across Russia.

Too polite — and wary of losing good customers — to mention the rising death toll in Ukraine, Chinese whose livelihoods depend on serving Russian tourists work hard to make their guests feel comfortable and welcome, gushing about the friendship and shared interests of the two countries.

To make money and also make Russians feel at home, locals have opened fake copies of well-known Moscow restaurants like Chaihona No. 1, a popular, fairly high-end chain known for fusion food that blends Central Asian and Slavic cuisines. The knockoff version here is called Chaihona No. 9.

Russia declares partial diesel export ban until year-end, extends gasoline ban

Reporting by Reuters; Writing by Mark Trevelyan; Editing by Mark Porter

September 30, 202510:18 PM GMT+8Updated September 30, 2025

MOSCOW, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Russia has imposed a partial ban on diesel exports and extended an existing gasoline export ban until the end of the year, the government said on Tuesday.

Russia is facing fuel shortages after a spate of Ukrainian attacks on its refineries.

The measures were expected, as Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak had given advance warning of them last week.

The government said in a statement that it "continues to work to maintain stability in the domestic fuel market."

The gasoline export ban applies to all exporters.

The ban on diesel exports also includes marine fuel and other gas oils. It applies to resellers but not to direct producers of those fuels.

Experts do not expect the restrictions to have a significant impact on fuel flows onto the domestic market, however, noting that Russia already has a prohibitive export tariff for non-producers of diesel.

The measures reflect the success Ukraine has had in knocking out chunks of Russia's refining capacity via drone attacks. Russia is the world's third-biggest oil producer after the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.

Gasoline shortages have been reported in a number of Russian regions, including in the far east and in Nizhny Novgorod, east of Moscow.

Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, introduced gasoline rationing on Monday, saying motorists would be restricted to 30 litres at a time. It also imposed a price freeze, in an apparent attempt to minimise public anger over the disruption.

Nizhny Novgorod

So, Russia has imposed a partial ban on diesel exports and extended an existing gasoline export ban until the end of the year. These measures reflect the success Ukraine has made in disrupting Russia's refining capacity by drone attacks. Apparently, the war may go on for some time unless something pop up and upset the status quo.

Recently Google News on-line picked up the following:

Kyiv can win all of Ukraine back from Russia, Trump says

BBC - Ruth Comerford and Anthony Zurcher

24 Sept. 2025

US President Donald Trump has said Kyiv can "win all of Ukraine back in its original form", marking a major shift in his position on the war with Russia.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, he said Ukraine could get back "the original borders from where this war started" with the support of Europe and Nato, due to pressures on Russia's economy.

His comments came after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, held after Trump had addressed the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to end the war, but has previously warned that process would likely involve Ukraine giving up some territory, an outcome Zelensky has consistently rejected.

In his post, Trump added Ukraine could "maybe even go further than that", but did not specify what he was referring to.

He also made no reference to Crimea, which was invaded and annexed by Russia in 2014. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump said his position had changed "after getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia military and economic situation".

"Putin and Russia are in BIG Economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act," he added, labelling Russia as a "paper tiger".

Zelensky hailed the "big shift" in Trump's position, and speaking to reporters in the UN building, said he understood the US was willing to give Ukraine security guarantees "after the war is finished".

Pressed on what this would look like, he added: "I don't want to lie, we don't have specific details," but broached the possibility of more weapons, air defenses and drones.

Earlier on Tuesday, following his speech to the UN, Trump also said Nato nations should shoot down Russian planes breaching their airspace, following a series of recent incursions by Russian fighter jets and drones.

Last week, Estonia and Poland requested a consultation with other Nato members after Russia violated its airspace in separate incidents. Romania, another Nato member, also said Russian drones breached its airspace.

Russia denied violating Estonia's airspace, while it insisted the Polish incursion was not deliberate and did not comment on the Romania incident.

Asked if the US would support its Nato allies if they shot down Russian aircraft, Trump said it "depends on the circumstance" and praised the military alliance for increasing defence spending.

"Nato has stepped up," he said, referring to an agreement by leaders to ramp up defence spending to 5% of their countries' economic output by 2035.

In his speech hours earlier, Trump criticised some Nato members for not ceasing the purchase of Russian energy, saying they were "funding a war against themselves".

Tuesday's Truth Social post represents an about-face after Trump spent most of the year insisting that Ukraine's situation was dire.

In February, Trump told Zelensky during their fiery Oval Office exchange that he did "not have the cards right now" to prevail against a larger, more populous nation in a war of attrition.

Before talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska in August, Trump said he would try to get some territory back for Ukraine but warned there would be "some swapping, changes in land".

There were reports he was planning to press Zelensky to surrender the entirety of the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in return for Russia freezing the rest of the front line - a proposal put forward by Putin in Alaska.

Trump has also repeatedly threatened to impose tougher measures on Russia, but has so far failed to take any action when the Kremlin ignored his deadlines and threats of sanctions.

Unpredictability has long been one of the US president's foreign policy trademarks, and perhaps this latest move is an attempt to shake up peace negotiations that have been stagnant for more than a month after Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Alaska.

The most notable portion of Trump's post may be the way it ended - with an assurance the US would continue to sell arms to Nato that it could then pass along to Ukraine.

It is not the seemingly near open-ended commitment to the war effort that the Biden administration provided, but it is more than Trump seemed interested in offering at times this year.

So, Donald Trump has said that Kyiv can "win all of Ukraine back in its original form", indicating a major shift in his position on the war with Russia. What is important is that he will continue to sell arms to NATO to pass them along to Ukraine. Trump’s foreign policy is often unpredictable, and perhaps this latest move is an attempt to shake up peace negotiations that have been stagnant after his meeting with  Putin in Alaska. Let’s wait and see what will happen next.
