Humen Fortress (虎門砲台) (I)

After visiting Hong Kong for about one month, it is nice to be home again. During my stay in Hong Kong I paid a brief visit to the Humen Fortress (虎門炮台) at Dongguan. Humen Fortress is consisting of the Wei Yuen (威遠), Jingyuan (靖遠), Zhenyuan (鎮遠), Nanshan Ding (南山頂) and the Shetouwan(蛇頭灣) Batteries. As a whole the Humen Fortress could provide firepower from the batteries located at the top, middle and foot of the mountain, thus creating an intersecting firepower net. Beginning from the late 1830s, it had played an important role in defending the sea route to Guangzhou when Qing started fighting against foreign aggression, mainly came from the British navel force.
