南鳥島沖附近貯藏有大量礦物

南鳥島沖のコバルトの埋蔵量、およそ65万トンと推定

日本最東端の南鳥島沖で、レアメタルを含む海底地層「コバルトリッチクラスト」の探査権を得た、JOGMEC(石油天然ガス・金属鉱物資源機構)は、コバルトの推定埋蔵量がおよそ65万トンにのぼることを明らかにした。
コバルトリッチクラストは、外側の黒い部分は、海中にある岩盤の上に沈殿してできたものとされ、コバルトやニッケル、プラチナなどのレアメタルが含まれている。
JOGMECは20日、国連海洋法条約に基づき、海底の鉱物資源を管理する国際海底機構の承認を受け、南鳥島の南東沖およそ600kmの公海域3,000平方kmで、コバルトリッチクラストを15年間、独占的に探査する権利を取得した。
鉱区では、日本の年間消費量のおよそ40年分に相当するコバルトおよそ65万トンや、およそ5年分のニッケルが採掘できると推定されているという。
JOGMECは、具体的な開発計画を策定し、調査研究を進めたいとしている。

At the offing of the Minami-torishima Island located at the most eastern tip of Japan, JOGMEC (Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) had acquired the right to explore, rare metal included, the submarine stratum "cobalt rich crust"; it showed clearly that probably there would be reserves of cobalt amount to about 650,000 tons.

About the cobalt rich crust, the outside black portion was the precipitation on the base rock in the sea, and it contained rare metals, such as cobalt, nickel, and platinum.

JOGMEC received the approval of the International Seabed Authority which managed submarine mineral resources based on the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. On the 20^th the company acquired the right to investigate the cobalt rich crust with monopoly for 15 years in the 3,000 square kilometers of high-seas region located at the offing about 600 km from the southeast of the Minami-torishima Island.

In the mining area, it was said that presumably there would be about 650,000 tons of cobalt; equivalent to about 40 years of annual consumption of Japan and about 5-year consumption of nickel could be mined.

JOGMEC would like to advance the formulating of a concrete development project and an investigation study.

Mineral resource is important for Japan’s industry. The discovery of a "cobalt rich crust" deposit is an important event.
