ANA reviews rules on heels, following JAL - #KuToo

Last month Asahi Shimbun Digital reported the following:

Translation

It was understood that ANA would, beginning from May, review internal regulations on shoes for female cabin attendants (CA) and ground staff. Until now, there was a rule on wearing pumps (shoes with holes on the top) with heels of "width and height of about 3 to 5 cm". But would change the rule on the heel height to "about 5 cm or less", with the lower limit removed.

According to All Nippon Airways, based on the opinions of users, had made changes in order to create an environment where employees could work comfortably. On the other hand, because of the "view point on balancing formalness and uniforms" (public relations officer), the specifications on pumps and their "black color and plain design" would be left as they were. The company said that there were regulations that required male CAs and ground personnel to wear black, plain, undecorated leather shoes.

Regarding the compulsory wearing of pumps at work, the “#KuToo” movement calling for the abolition was spreading. In the aviation industry, Japan Airlines had since April revised the standard for women CA shoes that had been specifying a heel height of "3-4 cm", to "0-4 cm". The specification on pumps had also been abolished, and loafers could now be worn.

So, it seems that the “#KuToo” movement in Japan could make an impact on the society sometimes.
