Iran, Saudi Arabia agree to normalize diplomatic relations, brokered by China

中東で長年、対立してきたイランとサウジアラビアは断交していた外交関係を正常化させることで合意しました。両国の合意は、中国が仲介したということで、中東での存在感を高める狙いもあるとみられます。

イランとサウジアラビアの両政府は10日、国営メディアを通じて互いの大使館を再開させて外交関係を正常化させることで合意したと発表しました。

それによりますと、両国は、中国の仲介のもと北京で協議を開いたということで中国も含めた3か国の共同声明で互いの主権を尊重することなどを確認したということです。

両国は2016年にサウジアラビアでイスラム教シーア派の指導者が処刑されたことをきっかけにイランにあるサウジアラビア大使館が襲撃され、外交関係を断絶していました。

中東の地域大国である両国が関係を正常化することで事実上の代理戦争の場となっていたイエメンの内戦の和平など地域の緊張緩和につながるかが焦点となります。

一方、中国としては原油の輸入などで関係を深めている両国を仲介することで中東での存在感を高める狙いもあるとみられます。

The governments of Iran and Saudi Arabia announced on the 10th through state media that they had agreed to reopen each other's embassies and normalize diplomatic relations.

 According to that, the two countries held talks in Beijing under the mediation of China, and confirmed that they would respect each other's sovereignty in a joint statement of the three countries, including China.

The two countries severed diplomatic ties in 2016 after the Saudi Arabian embassy in Iran was attacked following the execution of a Shia Muslim leader in Saudi Arabia.

The focus was on whether the normalization of relations between the two countries, which were regional powers in the Middle East, could lead to the easing of tensions in the region, such as peace in the civil war in Yemen, which had become a de facto proxy war.

On the other hand, China seemed aiming at increase presence in the Middle East by acting as an intermediary between the two countries, which had been deepening ties through imports of crude oil, etc.

So, Iran and Saudi Arabia hold talks in Beijing under the mediation of China, and agree to reopen each other's embassies and normalize diplomatic relations. It seems that the US’s influence in the Middle East is decreasing while the presence of China is increasing.
