EV=電気自動車や自動運転技術など、車の開発競争が加速する中、タイヤメーカーの間でも、新たな技術を導入する動きが活発になっています。

As the competition in the development of vehicles such as EVs (electric vehicles) and self-driving technology accelerates, there was increasing activities among tire manufacturers to introduce new technologies.
[Bridgestone] Tires that do not need to be inflated
Bridgestone was developing tires that would not need to pump
in air.
The inside of the tire had a structure similar to the spokes of a bicycle, and by using a special resin, its character had both the flexibility that led to a comfortable ride and the strength that supported the car body.
From this month, a demonstrative experiment with a small EV had started.
Yoshinori Iwabuchi (岩淵芳典), the project leader said, "If you reupholster the rubber, you can reuse it as many times as you want, and you can contribute to a recycling-oriented society."
[Sumitomo Rubber Industries] "Visualization" of
Tire Conditions with Sensors
Sumitomo Rubber Industries was developing a system that used
sensors to "visualize" the condition of tires.
Sensors installed in the car could check tire pressure and tire wear even while driving, aiming to prevent accidents.
It was planned to be put into practical use in 2024, and in the future, it would be possible to grasp the condition of tires even from a distance by adopting it for use in self-driving cars.
Mr. Kazuma Tokuda (徳田一真)of the Automotive Systems Division said, "As automated driving spreads and the opportunities for people to check cars decrease, we want to provide safety and security through this system."
So, with
the wide spread use of self-driving technology, the opportunities for people
to check cars decrease, Japanese tire companies want to provide added safety
and security through their new inventions. This is a new business opportunity.
