Is it a scene that a Chinese submarine is using an underground base? A satellite photograph spreads ripples

香港（ＣＮＮ） インターネット上で今週、中国の潜水艦が南シナ海の海南島で地下基地を使用する場面とみられる衛星写真が拡散し、軍事ウォッチャーの間で波紋を広げている。

この衛星写真は、米衛星画像企業プラネット・ラブズが「ラジオ自由アジア」のＳＮＳアカウントに最初に投稿した。画像には０９３型攻撃型原子力潜水艦とみられる艦船が、楡林海軍基地の地下施設につながるトンネルに入る様子が写っている。

ネット上では投稿直後からスパイ映画と比較する声が上がり、ツイッター利用者の１人はジェームズ・ボンドに言及。ジュール・ベルヌの小説「海底二万里」に登場する架空の潜水艦「ノーチラス号」に言及するユーザーもいた。

米国防総省の元当局者で、現在はシンガポール国立大リー・クアンユー公共政策大学院に所属するドリュー・トンプソン氏は、同潜水艦をとらえた写真は珍しいと説明。「商業衛星が（雲のない日に）適切なタイミングで上空を通過するのは異例だ」と指摘する。

トンプソン氏によると、中国政府は潜水艦から内陸部のミサイルシステムに至るまで、多くの軍装備品を地下に隠している。海岸線には特に注意を払っており、「沿岸部は攻撃に対して非常に脆弱（ぜいじゃく）だという認識が染みついている」という。

楡林基地は海南島の南端に位置し、中国海軍の資産を守ることを目的とした主要施設のひとつ。

非営利団体の核脅威イニシアチブによると、今回の潜水艦が０９３型だとすれば、中国が保有する６隻のうちの１隻とみられる。０９３型には３種類あり、魚雷や巡航ミサイルの搭載が可能だという。

Hong Kong (CNN) - This week, a satellite photo of a Chinese submarine appearing to use an underground base on Hainan Island in the South China Sea was spreading ripples among military watchers.

This satellite photo was first posted on the SNS account of "Radio Free Asia" by US satellite imaging company Planet Loves. The image showed a ship that appears to be a Type 093 attack-type nuclear submarine entering a tunnel leading to an underground facility at the Yulin Naval Base.

Immediately after posting on the Internet, there were voices compared this to spy movies, and one Twitter user mentioned about James Bond. Some users even referred to the fictional submarine "Nautilus" that appeared in Jules Berne's novel "Underwater 20,000 miles".

Drew Thompson, a former US Department of Defense official and now a member of the National University of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, explained that photographs of the submarine were rare. He said, "It's unusual for a commercial satellite to fly over the sky at the right time (on a cloudless day)."

According to Thompson, the Chinese government had hidden many military equipment underground, ranging from submarines to inland missile systems. Particular attention had been paid to the coastline, saying that "the coastal areas are perceived as being extremely vulnerable to attack."

The Yulin base was located at the southern end of Hainan Island and was one of the main facilities that aimed at protecting the assets of the Chinese Navy.

According to a non-profit organization the Nuclear Threat Initiative, if the submarine this time was type 093, it would be considered as one of the six ships owned by China. The Model 093 had three types, and could be equipped with torpedoes and cruise missiles.

So, the Yulin base located at the southern end of Hainan Island and is one of the main  naval base of China. Probably it is common knowledge among the US Navy.
