A pig specially designed for organ transplantation into humans is born for the first time in Japan

アメリカで開発された、ヒトに臓器を移植することを想定した特殊なブタを、明治大学発のベンチャー企業などのグループがクローン技術を使って生産することに成功し、国内で初めて子ブタが生まれたと発表しました。

これは、ブタのクローン技術などを研究する明治大学発のベンチャー企業「ポル・メド・テック」などのグループが発表しました。

このブタはアメリカのバイオ企業がヒトに臓器を移植することを想定して拒絶反応が起こりにくくなるよう遺伝子操作をした特殊なミニブタで、グループでは輸入されたこのブタの細胞からクローンを作製し、11日に3頭の子ブタが生まれたということです。

グループによりますと、ヒトへの移植を想定したこのブタが国内で生まれるのは初めてだということです。

ブタの臓器をヒトに移植する研究は、移植用の臓器の確保につながるとしてこの数年、各国で注目を集めています。

グループでは今後、研究機関などにブタを供給する予定だということで、ことし中にも臓器をサルに移植する研究を始めたいとしています。

ベンチャー企業の代表取締役で明治大学の長嶋比呂志教授は「無事に生まれてほっとしたが、これからがスタートだ。これで国内でも臨床応用に向けた議論が進むのではないか。安全性を大切に研究を進め、倫理的な課題の議論も深めたい」と話していました。

Hiroshi Nagashima (長嶋比呂志), CEO of the venture company and professor at Meiji University, said, ``I'm relieved that it was born safely, but this is just the beginning. I think this will move forward the discussion towards clinical application in Japan. We will conduct research with an emphasis on safety. I also want to deepen the discussion on ethical issues.''

So, a special pig for transplanting organs to humans has been successfully produced in Japan. If the transplant of organs from animal to human is made possible, that would be a big breakthrough in the medical history of mankind.
