Last year, President Biden ordered the mass release of documents related to President Kennedy's assassination in two stages. This time was the second stage. In that same year, the White House postponed the release due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The White House said in a memorandum on Thursday to point out that the assassination of President Kennedy was one of the remaining great tragedies in American history and was remembered by many Americans who lived through it. Therefore, the U.S. government acknowledged that it was extremely important to ensure maximum transparency through the release of all recorded information regarding the assassination.
In the memorandum, Biden said that public archives and other agencies would review remaining private documents until May next year. Afterwards, he said that "any information that is withheld from public release, and the agency does not recommend it to continue the postponement" would be released before the end of June of the same year.
The assassination of President Kennedy raised multiple questions in the opinion of the public and among researchers, and many conspiracy theories were discussed. In response to these the government took a secretive position.
Researchers warned that it would likely take days to thoroughly scrutinize the plethora of documents to find no new clues to the assassination. The verification process would also look for new information about the activities of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the 1960s.
But for many members of the parliament and those activists asking
for transparency, releasing all surviving documents would be important in
restoring trust in the government. For years, polls on this case had shown that
most Americans didn't believe the official version of the government's
commission of inquiry. The commission concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the
solo murder of President Kennedy.
So, the
US National Archives releases previously classified documents related to
JFK’s assassination. To release all surviving documents can be important in
restoring trust in the government and improving its transparent image. The act
to regularly declassify government documents is one of the many features of a
democratic government.
