自殺之旅: 瑞士５年內有６００人

　末期のがん患者らの自殺を手助けするサービスを受けるためにスイスを訪れる外国人「自殺ツーリスト」が、２００８年からの５年間で６００人を超えたことがわかった。チューリヒ大などの研究グループが専門誌「医療倫理ジャーナル」（電子版）に発表した。

　スイスでは、終末期の病人に対する医療従事者の自殺幇助（ほうじょ）が認められている。

　研究グループは、チューリヒの法医学研究所に残された外国人の検視記録を調査。自殺ツーリストを受け入れる支援組織との関係も考慮すると、０８～１２年に欧州を中心に計３１カ国の６１１人が、スイスを訪れて死亡したと認定した。主な内訳はドイツ人２６８人、英国人１２６人、フランス人６６人、イタリア人４４人、米国人２１人、オーストリア人１４人で、日本人はいなかった。自殺方法は、鎮静作用のある麻酔薬のペントバルビタール・ナトリウムの投与がほとんどを占めた。

　この検視記録が扱うのはチューリヒ市と周辺部の死者のみだが、研究グループによると、受け入れ先がこの地域に集中しているため、ほぼ全てのケースを網羅しているという。

　スイスでは自殺ツーリストの受け入れの是非について議論が起きており、１１年にはチューリヒ州で「外国人に対する自殺幇助の禁止」を求める住民投票が実施されたが、否決された。（ジュネーブ＝松尾一郎）

It turned out that the "suicide tourist" foreigners, those terminally ill cancer patients who visited Switzerland in order to receive help to commit suicide, had exceeded 600 people in five years since 2008. Zurich University etc. research groups announced this to a technical magazine the "Medical ethics journal" (electronic edition).

In Switzerland, medical workers were allowed to assist the terminally ill patients with suicide.

A research group had investigated the foreigner's inquest record left behind to the forensic laboratory in Zurich. When the relation with the aiding agency which accepted suicide tourists was taken into consideration, it presumed that in 2008-12 among the visitors from a total of 31 countries who made Europe as the center, 611 died in Switzerland. German was the majority with 268 people, British 126 people, French 66, Italian 44, American 21, and 14 people from Austria. There was no Japanese. As for the suicide method, using medication of sodium pentobarbitone, an anesthetic drug with a sedative action was the majority.

According to the research group, although the death was only in Zurich and the surrounding area, since the host institutions were concentrating in this region, it was said that the inquest record covered almost all cases.

Although arguments had occurred in Switzerland about the right or wrong in accepting suicide tourists, a referendum in 2011 asking abut the "prohibition of assisted suicide to foreigners" held in the State of Zurich was voted down.

It is shocking to note that "suicide tourism" was systemically carried out in Switzerland.
