A few weeks ago the NHK News on-line reported the following:

In Vietnam the construction of a suspension type iron bridge built with the support of Japan was completed and currently it served as the longest in Southeast Asia; the related Japanese party expected that it would become a bridge of friendship for both countries.

This bridge was the "Nhat Tan Bridge" which used the yen loan of ODA - Official Development Assistance of Japan and two major companies of Japan started building it four years ago.

The bridge was built over a river which flowed through capital Hanoi. The bridge was 1500 meters long, as a cable-stayed bridge and being a suspension bridge type its length was the longest in Southeast Asia.

A ceremony which celebrated the completion of construction was held on the 15th (April). Nguyen Hong Nguyen Truong the traffic vice-minister in the greeting evaluated Japanese technology by saying that "advanced construction technology was introduced and work was done safely".

This bridge was scheduled to become part of the new trunk road that connected the international airport and the city center of Hanoi. When the bridge was opened for traffic, it was expected that this bridge would relieve the traffic congestion which was posing a problem locally.

In connection with economic growth, many Japanese companies’ factories had advanced to Hanoi. The related Japanese led to an increase in efficiency of the physical distribution and also indicated their expectation that the bridge could became a bridge of friendship for both countries.

On the bridge, the road portion construction and the lighting installation etc. were being carried out and it would be opened for traffic in October this year.

It seems that the co-operation between Vietnam and Japan is increasing.
