A few weeks ago the Yomiuri News on-line reported the following:

It was made clear that Panasonic would
withdraw from producing liquid crystal television in China .
It produced 200,000 a year for the Chinese
markets, but there was severe competition from Korean and Chinese manufacturers
at low price and it was judged that profit could not be expected. The closing
of its Mexico factory which
produced 500,000 liquid crystal televisions a year for North
America was also being considered. With bases reduced and deficit
continuing, re-arrangement of television business was urgent.
The production of the liquid crystal
television factory in Shantung province
of China was stopped on
the 30th (January). About 300 employees were dismissed; to liquidate
the production subsidiary company which had invested 80 percent in it was being
planned. Globally Panasonic had 10 television factories; the only production
base inside China was in Shantung province. From now on production would be
entrusted to other companies and the sale using the Panasonic brand name would continue.
When the production in Mexico was also withdrawn, its global production would be decreased by about 10 percent.
It is
interesting to note that Korean and Chinese manufactures are key players in
liquid crystal television production inside China .
