Recently the NHK News reported the following:

In an investigation done by Niigata Prefecture on the rice that displayed "100% Niigata Prefecture Koshihikari" that was sold in retail stores in the whole country, it had been found that the rice that was true to the display stayed at 2/3 of whole amount, other types of rice with unknown production location were being mixed into it.
Niigata Prefecture in total took 200 bags as sample, one each from the 200 stores in the whole country such as in the metropolitan area, in Kansai, and in Kyushu retail stores that sold the rice displaying "100% Niigata Prefecture Koshihikari", and did the DNA test. The result, according to Niigata Prefecture was that it was able to confirm that among those 200 bags having a display of '100% Koshihikari of Niigata Prefecture', 131 bags had 65% in the whole bag. In other bags, it was understood that they were mixed with other types of rice with production location could not be specified. In the investigation held last month on Niigata Prefecture Koshihikari, the bags written "Niigata Prefecture Koshihikari" etc.were put into with other rice etc and sold; a trader in Tokyo was arrested. Niigata Prefecture, based on this round of investigation, was suspecting that there might be other cases of intentionally mixing of rice, and would investigate the dealings between traders etc. with a view for criminal indictments.
It is disappointing to note that some rice traders in Japan are cheating their customers.
