Recently the NHK News reported the following:

As the market price of crude oil was soaring, the world's largest scale factory of bio diesel was completed in Singapore, and as an alternate fuel it was given attention; the commemorative ceremony was held on the 8th.
The factory established in Singapore was the investment of an oil company in Finland that had invested 63 billion yen to construct; it could produce 800,000 tons of bio diesel a year using palm oil taken from the palm as the main raw material, and this factory of bio diesel became the world's largest in scale. As for the bio diesel, it was assumed that it had connections with measures to control global warming, and its demand had increased rapidly in Europe and America, and the fuel made in this Singapore factory would be exported to Europe. On the other hand, on the advance of bio diesel as gasoline substitution and as the plan to promote industry in Asia, there were deep rooted voice of doubt over the use of palm oil as the raw material for burning fuel, because it was widely used as cheap cooking oil in homes. Especially, with the demand for bio diesel was increasing recently, and in some parts of the country such as Thailand the price hike and the shortage of palm oil were serious, the completion of a huge factory in Singapore would likely re-start the discussion over the use of raw material for the bio diesel.
Whether agricultural food product should be used as the raw material to produce fuel is always a topic for argument.

On the 6th the "Tokyo sky tree" as an independent signal transmitting tower with a height that was tallest in the world was for the first time publicly open to reporters its observatory floor that existed 345 meters above the ground. It was said that this observatory platform was higher than the Tokyo Tower.
The observatory platform of the "Tokyo sky tree" was open to the public for the first time on the 6th when a day earlier it had become the best independent transmitter tower in the world that would exceed 600 meters.
After changing the construction site elevators twice, and rising for about 6 minutes the first observatory platform which was 345 meters about the ground was arrived. The particularly large white looking Tokyo Dome was seen. It was said that restaurants and the shops etc. were scheduled to be built at this observatory floor, and about 2,000 people could be risen up here.
Namei Tabuchi the head of the new tower construction work office said 「There are fireworks at Sumidagawa when it is summer. (Fireworks to be seen below?) Really, there is a feeling of looking down at it. Just see it at half of the height」. It was scheduled to reach the highest point of 634 meters by the end of March. The opening of the "Tokyo sky tree" was expected to be held at the spring of 2012.
It is a huge construction work. I believe that soon there will be higher signal transmitting towers in Asia.

Recently the NHK news reported the following:

Foreign Minister Maehara met with five former Australia soldiers that had became the captives of the Japanese army during the Pacific War and said that "For the extensive damage and pain given to you I expressed my renewed deep remorse and sincere apology", and officially apologized for the first time.
It was five former Australia soldiers who had became captives of the Japanese army in the Pacific War in Singapore and Indonesia etc. together with their families that met Foreign Minister Maehara. Foreign Minister Maehara apologized that "I express renewed remorse and sincere apology for the severe loss and pain caused by my country to a lot of people that included Australia's former prisoners of war". On the matter of prisoners of war, this was the first time to express apology to former Australian soldiers although last September Foreign Minister Okada officially apologized to former soldiers of the United States for the first time. Moreover, after having handed over a copy of the material that was called "Individual Record" etc. to the five people, Foreign Minister Maehara talked about the idea that he wanted to start preparation to hand over of the copy materials that kept the personal records of the prisoners of war to other former Australian captives. Mr. Charles Richards, a former soldier who had requested the Japanese Government to officially apologize described that 「This apology is a historical event. The restoration of individual records is important not only for the former prisoners but also for their families」.
I am wondering in future will Japan do the same to the Chinese soldiers.

Recently the Asahi News reported the following:

On the first, the senior officials from the headquarters of the staff of the Russian army described to Interfax News Agency the deployment of the movable missile system that equipped with the supersonic speed anti-ship cruise missile "Yahonto" to the coast of Kurile islands consisting the Kuril Islands and the northern territories. In addition, the plan to deploy new offensive helicopters to Etorofuto was revealed where surface to air missile system "Toll M2" was scheduled to be deployed. In February, President Medvedev declared the strengthening of the effective rule on northern territories that included the military side. The Department of Defense was advancing reforms that improve the equipment to the state-of-the-art level together with some reduction in the number of local troops.
Yahonto could carried the warhead over 200 kilo with a range of 300 km. Toll M2 was assumed to be able to aim at four targets at the same time, and had twice better performance compared with the conventional type.
Russia is improving its military capability in the northern territories. I hope this would not cause further arguments between Japan and Russia.

Recently the NHK News reported the following:

Toyota Motor formally announced that it would pair up with a big trader and a local auto manufacturer to extend sales in Russia because car sales had rapidly recovered, and the production of cars would started next spring in Vladivostok. It would be the first time that a Japanese auto manufacturer opened production footholds in the Far East of Russia.
According to the announcement, parts would be supplied to the established joint venture company by Mitsui & Co., Ltd. together with "Sora-zu" the auto manufacturer in Russia; and Toyota would start the production of SUV the multipurpose sports cars next spring in the factory in Vladivostok. The scale of production would be 1000 a month now and produced cars would be sold using the Toyota sales network throughout Russia. This was the first time for a auto manufacturer in Japan to open production footholds in the Far East although there were Toyota and Nissan production factories around Saint Petersburg in western Russia. Although car sales market in Russia had gone down greatly after the financial crisis, last year it recovered rapidly to about two million and was expected to grow in the future. In addition, the Russian government was making efforts to attract the auto sector to go to the Far East, and it was expected that Toyota would offer productive techniques to the local firms, and it could be seen that there was an attempt which aimed at business expansion in the growing market.

Recently the NHK News reported the following:

It was clarified that more than 30 years ago Japanese Government had been putting pressure on the South Korea government so that capital punishment was not carried out on the former President Kim Dae-jung of South Korea after Kim was given the death sentence for the crime of plotting the civil war.
This was clarified in the diplomatic document that the South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affair and Trade had opened to the public on the 21st. According to it, in May 1980 in a student-led demonstration the so-called "Gwangju Indicant" that was suppressed by the army, it was assumed that Kim Dae-jung was the leader of the democracy movement at that time and was taking the lead in plotting the demonstration that requested democratization; he received the death sentence for the crime of plotting the civil war. In the same year in November, it was said that Prime Minister Suzuki at that time met ambassador Tse Gyonnoku of South Korea who was residing in Japan to convey the message that "if the maximum penalty is carried out, cooperation with South Korea would turn into a difficult situation" because a minus influence would be given to the relations between Japan and South Korea. In addition, it was clarified that Prime Minister Suzuki had been telling the view that the public opinion in Japan that requested the strengthening of relations with North Korea then South Korea would arise if the capital punishment was carried out. Moreover, in the diplomatic document, it was also recorded that nine assembly members of the House of Representatives of the United States had sent a letter to president Chun Doo-hwan at that time to give a warning that "the relation between the United States and South Korea would fail if Kim is executed". The death sentence on Kim was commuted to life imprisonment in 1981; with the opening of the diplomatic document to the public as the background, it stood out that the change was due to the appeal from Japan and the United States.
In the early 1980s, the course of history in South Korea was changed by efforts of the US and Japan. Kim Dae-jung (1925-2009) less than 20 years later was given the chance to serve his country as the president, from 1998 to 2003.
