ソニー、タブレット端末事業を大幅見直しへ

ソニーモバイルコミュニケーションズの十時裕樹社長は19日、読売新聞などの取材に対し、ソニーが国内外で展開しているタブレット端末事業を大幅に見直す考えを明らかにした。
縮小させる方向とみられる。
十時社長は、タブレット事業は、2013年度で売上高の5%にとどまっていることを明らかにし、「日本以外では特徴を出せていない。価格競争力も優位性がなく、ソニーに意味があるほどのボリュームもない」と指摘した。そのうえで、「時間をかけて商品企画からやり直したい」と述べた。
一方、収益の柱となるスマートフォン事業については、「ソニーの研究開発部門ともっと連携して、新たな技術を製品に入れていきたい」と述べ、新技術を盛り込んだ高価格帯の機種を軸に展開する方針を示した。

of Tablet terminal business of Sony domestic and abroad.

President Totoki, regarding the Tablet
business, made clear that in fiscal year 2013 it stopped at 5% of the net sales;
and also pointed out that "it could not show the characteristic anywhere
except in Japan and there were no advantage in price competitiveness, and its
volume was not to the extent significant to Sony". Furthermore he stated
that "I would like to spend time to start again from product planning".
On the
other hand, about the smart phone business which had become the pillar of
profit, he stated that "I would like to cooperate more with the research
and development division of Sony, and would like to put new technology into the
product" and showed the policy of incorporating new technology to make
the deployment of high-priced models as the key focus.
So, Sony
will shift its focus away from Tablet productions.
