Last month the
Yomiuri News on-line reported the following:

On the 21st (October) the Shizuoka Prefecture, based on the Japanese
Agricultural Standards (JAS) Method and the Law for Preventing Misleading
Representation, pointed to the eel cultivation and sales company "The
Oigawa Eel Trading" (President Shuji Yabusaki) of the Yoshida town in the
same prefecture for display improvement because the company pretended their
eels as from China and Taiwan, and sold them as a product from Shizuoka, or from
domestic production.
The eel with its place of production misrepresented was processed
into kabayaki. It was said that since last spring at least about 9 tons were
sold to the wholesalers in 10 locations in different prefectures, counties and
the capital. On the 21st the Prefecture Police searched the company etc. on
suspicion of violating the Unfair Competition Prevention Act (misconception inducement).
According to the prefecture’s announcement, using the eels from China and Taiwan ,
the company misrepresented them as kabayaki from Shizuoka . The product was processed by 5
contractors (one company had already given up its business), and sold it to the
wholesalers from April 2012 to July 2013. The prefecture also gave directives
to the four processing contractors to make improvement based on the JAS method.
The action taken by the prefecture is good
news for all the consumers.
