9日に64回目の「原爆の日」を迎えた被爆地、長崎では、午前中、麻生首相も出席し、平和祈念式典が営まれる。長崎市の平和公園では、8日夜、平和のキャンドルに明かりがともされた。平和公園は、9日の平和祈念式典の会場となっていて、鎮魂の炎が祈りの1日の始まりを告げた。式典は午前10時40分から営まれ、麻生首相や核兵器保有国のロシアを含めた、過去最多となる29カ国の駐日本大使らが参列する。長崎市の田上市長は、平和宣言でアメリカ、オバマ大統領が「核兵器のない世界を目指す」と発言したプラハ演說を支持したうえで、核保有国など10カ国の首脳に対し、長崎訪問を呼びかけることにしている。
