On the 31st (January), the Irabu Bridge (3,540 meters long) which linked up Irabu Island with Miyakojima of the Okinawa prefecture’s Miyakojima city was opened to traffic.

According to the prefecture, as a toll free bridge, except for the bridge connecting Kitakyushu Airport (2,100 meters), it was the longest in the country.

The population of Irabujima was about 5,400. Islanders who traveled to Miyakojima where the city office was located were limited to using a ship. In order to remove the statement of "a solitary island among the isolated islands" the demand to the prefecture to build a bridge etc. had started since some 40 years ago.

The prefecture began work in the fiscal year 2005; the project cost including the help from the country was about 39,500 million yen. One lane was constructed on each side; water pipes and piping for agricultural water were also laid.

While about 800 people attended its opening ceremony on the 31st, the islanders also celebrated the completion and opening of this new bridge. A housewife Ms. Yaeko Hirose (32) of Irabujima, who was holding her eldest daughter (1) and crossing the bridge, talked with a smiling face that "even if my child was suddenly ill, it was a relief that she could have vehicle transportation immediately".

I think this new bridge could help local tourism too.
