Recently the Yomiuri News on-line reported the following:

7-Eleven Japan announced on the 30th (January) that their nation wide domestic store sales by end of February, 2012 would break through 3 trillion yen.
This was the first time for a single chain-store to exceed 3 trillion yen in the domestic retail industry. It amounted to 3 trillion yen on January 28, and all the store sales in the period ending February was expected to extend by about 10% compared with the preceding period to reach 3,249 billion yen.
Against the background of the East Japan great earthquake etc., the consumers who bought daily necessaries and the daily dish etc. at a convenience store had increased in number; also by customer stratum, there was a spreading among housewives and elderly people.
According to the account settlement for the period from March to November 2011, Japan domestic average sales for one 7-Eleven store in one day was 675,000 yen, which was 45,000 yen higher when compared with the corresponding period last year; also there was an increase of 30 people each day, making the average number of customers to stand at 1081. Because there was a sales increase, new ones were scheduled to open in the 2012 fiscal year to a new height of 1350 shops.

I think convenient stores should be among the few business that have been favourably affected by the earthquake.
